LANDSCAPE PAINTING WORKSHOP ( 24-28th June)

The landscape painting workshop runs for 5 days  from Saturday to Wednesday. It is for intermediate and advanced levels. You can attend for as many days as you wish, but it is recommended that you come for a minimum of 2 to 3 days to get the most benefit. There is a 15% discount for those booking for 5 days. This is also a great opportunity for families or partners wanting to take a short break. Those who want to immerse themselves in art can, while others can do a whole range of outdoor activities which the area offers in abundance http://www.breconbeacons.org/do

LOCATION.

We are located in the Brecon Beacons National Park.  The house and studio are situated above Talgarth in the foothills of the Black Mountains, six miles from Hay-on-Wye. The garden has a 25 mile  view over the Middle Wye Valley.Further up the hill from us is the 12th century church of Llanelieu. This leads you to the open moor  with  magnificent views of the Brecon Beacons and Black Mountains. The open countryside in this area is very accessible as it’s a National Park. There are many public footpaths and roads which take you across  large expanses of common land.

There is no shortage of subject matter . Within a mile there is a nature reserve called Pwll-y-Wrach. This is 40 acre site of woodland with a series of waterfalls. Then  5 miles away there is  Llangorse which is the largest lake in Wales, and 3 miles in the other direction is the River Wye.

WORKING PROCESSES
The workshop is suitable for intermediate and advanced levels. It is essential to have had a good grounding in both drawing and painting skills, The emphasis and direction will be on  “plein air” methods ,  which will mean directly drawing and painting on the spot, then using those studies, notes, and photographs  to make  an independent  work in the studio. Constable and Turner were great exponents  of this approach and many others since. In addition to there is the possibility of inclement weather which could drive you back to the studio leaving the good spells as moments you have to capture with spontaneity.
Those attending for 4 or 5 days will  have more time to develop  studio work with many opportunities to go back to their source material for more information. Those coming for shorter periods will obviously have less time for a studio work but more time to work directly from the landscape.
.
Everyone will have a space  to work in the studio and  pin up their work. The teaching will end at 4pm, but the studio will remain open for those who want to continue working to dusk. The late afternoon and evening light  is really the best time to experience work in the landscape
MATERIALS : Equipment – what to bring

We have a certain amount of drawing  materials and paint .  Testimonial

“I have found  Niel’s Tutorial /Workshops  incredibly useful as they have motivated me to keep going with work that seemed hopeless and has subsequently proved to be rewarding.  It has been most enjoyable and instructive to view others’ work, to exchange ideas and also to see Niel’s own work in progress.  The sessions have been very relaxed with Sue’s soup at lunchtime. the. If you work at home alone I would thoroughly recommend these classes ”  Virginia Brown March 2016.

PORTRAIT PAINTING @ Art Courses Wales. 3 days

PORTRAIT PAINTING and DRAWING . 3 days –  (2 sitters)

Portrait Painting and drawing with two sitters in the studio at the same time. This will mean one model  between 4 people. The advantage  is being able to study the subject  as close as  5 feet away.  Therefore this is an exceptional opportunity. In most portrait class you will find yourself  between 15ft or 20ft from the model.  The closer you are the better you can judge proportions, form and detail .

This course is ideal for beginners as well as the more experienced. It is a real chance to concentrate on the nuts and bolts of drawing and/or  painting and how you construct and make a portrait. You also  have a choice of two models and you can work from both.

Materials. We have large sheets of paper, drawing materials and various paints and canvases in stock. You can use oil and gouache paints for £6 a day. Otherwise bring materials of your choice. The studio is fully equipped with  8 studio easels, work stations and drawing boards.

Booking& Fees.  This course is  more expensive than a life class  due to  having an extra model. However an “early bird” booking  is £191. Preference will be given to those booking for the full three days. There are a few places set aside for one or two days.

Click “here ” for examples of portrait painting and drawing  produced on these courses.

EARLY BIRD DISCOUNTS  .   There are four places set aside on each course  for earlybird bookings.
