LANDSCAPE PAINTING WORKSHOP ( 24-28th June)
The landscape painting workshop runs for 5 days from Saturday to Wednesday. It is for intermediate and advanced levels. You can attend for as many days as you wish, but it is recommended that you come for a minimum of 2 to 3 days to get the most benefit. There is a 15% discount for those booking for 5 days. This is also a great opportunity for families or partners wanting to take a short break. Those who want to immerse themselves in art can, while others can do a whole range of outdoor activities which the area offers in abundance http://www.breconbeacons.org/do
We are located in the Brecon Beacons National Park. The house and studio are situated above Talgarth in the foothills of the Black Mountains, six miles from Hay-on-Wye. The garden has a 25 mile view over the Middle Wye Valley.Further up the hill from us is the 12th century church of Llanelieu. This leads you to the open moor with magnificent views of the Brecon Beacons and Black Mountains. The open countryside in this area is very accessible as it’s a National Park. There are many public footpaths and roads which take you across large expanses of common land.
There is no shortage of subject matter . Within a mile there is a nature reserve called Pwll-y-Wrach. This is 40 acre site of woodland with a series of waterfalls. Then 5 miles away there is Llangorse which is the largest lake in Wales, and 3 miles in the other direction is the River Wye.
The workshop is suitable for intermediate and advanced levels. It is essential to have had a good grounding in both drawing and painting skills, The emphasis and direction will be on “plein air” methods , which will mean directly drawing and painting on the spot, then using those studies, notes, and photographs to make an independent work in the studio. Constable and Turner were great exponents of this approach and many others since. In addition to there is the possibility of inclement weather which could drive you back to the studio leaving the good spells as moments you have to capture with spontaneity.
Those attending for 4 or 5 days will have more time to develop studio work with many opportunities to go back to their source material for more information. Those coming for shorter periods will obviously have less time for a studio work but more time to work directly from the landscape.
Everyone will have a space to work in the studio and pin up their work. The teaching will end at 4pm, but the studio will remain open for those who want to continue working to dusk. The late afternoon and evening light is really the best time to experience work in the landscape
